air purifiers for hayfever

How does an air purifier work for hay fever sufferers?

How an air purifier will give hay fever sufferers some relief

Summer is here! As lovely as it is to feel the sun on our skin, it can be a nightmare for hay fever sufferers. Tree, flower and shrub pollen, even in cities can cause dry itchy eyes, sneezing and shortness of breath. Plus, in the workplace, the summer means you are more likely to have the windows open, contaminating the indoor air with pollen and allergens. One way you can combat pollen in the workplace is to use an air purifier to help filter out harmful particles.

How does an air purifier work?

Air purifiers are machines that use fans to suck in air, pass it through filters to neutralise pollutants and then recirculate the clean air. Air purifiers contain HEPA filters and carbon filters to help remove fine particles from the air as small as 0.3 microns. They purify the air by filtering out harmful airborne particles such as pollen, dust mites, smoke, mould spores, germs and VOC’s. Some air filters also sense odour causing bacteria and adjust the fan speed accordingly to handle the pollutants.

How can an air purifier help with hay fever?

You may have heard that air purifiers are great at cleansing the air of germs and viruses. Air purifiers can be particularly useful in the winter when we naturally spend more time indoors and when it’s more difficult to keep the windows open to clean the air. In summer, air filters can help by filtering out pollen spores that may enter the workplace through open windows, providing relief to sufferers.

How to choose the right air purifier

When choosing an air purifier, the first thing to consider is how large your room is and whether the air purifier will be powerful enough to filter the air effectively. For small rooms or home office use we recommend the Leitz TruSens Z1000 for coverage of up to 23 square metres. For larger rooms, of up to 129m2 try the Braun Scan and Clean Air Purifier. We are here to advise you on the best product for the size of your workplace, so please contact us if you are unsure which product would work best.

Air purifiers for allergy sufferers

The major benefit of air purifiers if you suffer from allergies is that they remove much of the allergens from the air which can help prevent reactions. Preventing aggravating particles from the home or workplace in the first place can reduce the need for medication.

Good housekeeping

Air purifiers won’t remove allergens from clothes, surfaces or furnishings so they need to be used in conjunction with good housekeeping. The air purifier filters also need to be replaced regularly (every 30 – 90 days) to be completely effective.
