eco friendly stationery

Why choose eco-friendly office stationery?

What is eco friendly stationery and why do you need it for your office?

Stationery is an office essential. No office can function without the key items like pens, paper, notebooks and files. But as we move towards a more sustainable way of living, many stationery products are manufactured using unsustainable materials or components that cannot be recycled.

Why not make 2022 the year of becoming a more sustainable business by choosing to purchase eco-friendly stationery? We run through the benefits of purchasing eco-friendly stationery and why it pays in the long run to choose to go eco.

The Sustainable Workplace

Ireland has a target to cut greenhouse emissions by 51% and become a carbon neutral country by 2050. Businesses large and small can contribute to this in many ways. One way is by choosing to purchase sustainable products. Consider purchasing items that are built to last or that can be recycled when they come to the end of their useful life. Simple suggestions are choosing products such as bamboo over plastic. Bamboo is a fast-growing, sustainable material that, unlike plastic, does not require a lengthy refining to produce.

When choosing your stationery, consider whether there are eco-friendly alternatives. For example, office paper. Whilst we all try to minimise the amount of paper we use in the office, but when you need to buy a stock of paper, choose a brand that is recycled or that has been sustainably sourced.

Other sustainable products include ones that have been produced using no virgin materials at all. These pencils are wood free and are produced using 90% recycled plastic cups meaning no trees have been felled to manufacture.

Save single use plastic

Many stationery items are made from recycled plastic, and often there are no alternatives to choosing plastic. The major brands in stationery are moving towards using 100% biodegradable polypropylene that will degrade when it can no longer be used anymore. These clip files from Rapesco are 100% recyclable with no compromise on the quality of the product.

When there is no choice but to go for plastic, choose a product where the carbon has been offset in production such as these vibrant fineliners from Schneider.

Or go plastic-free!

You don’t always have to go for plastic. Choose recycled paper notebooks or products such as Sellotape that have been made from natural materials. Even solvent-free Pritt Glue Stick has been made with natural materials like potato starch, sugar and water. Or a water-based adhesive on these sticky notes.

Try refillable versions

Instead of throwaway pens that have a limited life, consider purchasing a pen that uses cartridges that can be refilled. These refillable ink pens are produced with up to 90% recycled materials and a smooth gel ink.

Why not give remanufactured ink cartridges a try? These are printer cartridges that have been refilled and refurbished using existing materials. Considering that printer cartridges take around 1,000 years to fully decompose, it makes sense to use existing parts and avoid these products ending up in landfill. We stock an excellent range of remanufactured cartridges for all the major machines.

Barriers to buying eco

Many businesses may feel that budget constraints are preventing you from purchasing eco-friendly products. However, eco products don’t always have to be expensive. Try these great value Q Connect pens that are produced using biodegradable materials.

By purchasing eco-friendly stationery products, you can demonstrate your commitment to a more sustainable workplace and help work towards a carbon neutral economy.
